In the modern history of the Indian subcontinent – at the point where the Colonial and the Post-Colonial, where slavery and freedom, intersect – Partition is the first experience of the terror of violence, and probably the most complex, most tragic and most far-reaching in its effects. One that, on private and public levels, changed the lives of millions of people and affected the direction that the two resulting, newborn nation-states would take. In this feature we present stories by Saadat Hasan Manto and Mohan Rakesh, an excerpt from Krishna Baldev Vaid’s novel, Sukrita Paul Kumar’s paper that reads Partition as “the uncontrolled release of a bizarre male violence on the one hand and a nerve-wrecking dis-membering of the female body and self on the other.” We also have a piece by the young sociologist Sadan Jha which not only presents the anxiety of hearing accounts of Partition, but also reads the distance between experience and its expression, between a victim and a researcher, between history and the present, and an essay by Alok Bhalla that locates Partition and identity politics as reflected in language – the most basic means of communicating with the “other” – and invents this fascinating metaphor of non-violence in the city of the mind.
