The poems by Alok Bhalla, H.S. Shivaprakash, Laltu, Priya Sarukkai Chhabria, Anjum Hasan, Danish Husain, Anupama Raju, Anindita Sengupta and Aditi Machado presented here express in various forms the various faces and sources of terror. H.S. Shivaprakash and Laltu make 9/11 the subject of their poetry, Alok Bhalla’s poems are from his “Israeli Journal”, Danish’s poems are about war and war-poetry, Anjum Hasan, Anindita Sengupta and Aditi Machado’s poems are marked by a restrained, personal rhythm, Priya Sarukkai’s poem is made up of fragments of different poems and Anupama Raju’s haiku are built upon some recognizable descriptors of violence.

Like the poems, the stories presented here also express in various forms the various faces and sources of terror – Gulzar’s story presents the blindness of communal violence as the spontaneity of an atavistic violence, which, in its own way, Manjula Padmanabhan’s monologue also does; Preet Samarasan’s story takes place in the Japan-occupied Malaya of 1948; the excerpts from Geetanjali Shree’s novel Khali Jagah tell of the disturbing presence of a boy killed in a bomb blast; and Nitasha’s terror-fantasy presents an unnamed terror, a terror that is know only by the pronoun That.
