इस खंड में वे पाठ और व्यक्तित्व शामिल हैं जिन्हें (उत्तर) भारतीय गाँव का कैननिकल प्रतिनिधि माना जाता हैः प्रेमचंद (कफ़न), फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु, राही मासूम ऱजा (आधा गाँव), महबूब (मदर इंडिया), केदारनाथ सिंह (कुदाल). कफ़न और ए वंडरफुल स्टूडियो (रेणु) के नये अनुवाद, हमारे आग्रह पर, अर्शिया सत्तार और भारतभूषण तिवारी ने किये हैं. कुदाल पर कृष्ण मोहन झा का और आधा गाँव व मदर इंडिया पर गिरिराज किराड़ू के निबंध तथा गाँव के समकालीन कथाकारों में प्रमुख शिवमूर्ति से प्रभात रंजन का संवाद जहाँ इस समस्यामूलक प्रतिनिधत्व के विभिन्न पक्षों को पढ़ने का प्रयास करते हैं वहीं विनोद कुमार शुक्ल के उपन्यास खिलेगा तो देखेंगे को वरिष्ठ आलोचक मदन सोनी ने इस तरह पढ़ा हैं कि यह अद्वितीय उपन्यास गाँव को एक विषय भर नहीं बनाता बल्कि खुद उसकी सरंचना एक पाठीय गाँव की है. रेणु के लेखन को युवा समाज विज्ञानी सदन झा ऐसे लेखन की तरह पढ़ते हैं जो देश-काल में काल को वरीयता देने पर आधारित औपनिवेशिक आधुनिकता की राष्ट्रवादी निर्मिति के बाहर संभव होता है – अपने ढब से, अपनी शर्तों पर आधुनिक और अपने लोकेल जैसा ही अनोखा, हेटेरोटोपियाई लेखन.

This section features writers/artists who are considered the canonical representatives of the (north) Indian village: Premchand, Phanishwar Nath Renu, Rahi Masoom Raza, Mehboob and Kedarnath Singh. Premchand’s Kafan and Renu’s A Wonderful Studio are in new translations by Arshia Sattar and Bharatbhooshan Tiwari respectively. Krishna Mohan Jha’s piece on Kedarnath Singh’s Kudal, Giriraj Kiradoo’s essays on Aadha Gaon(Raza) and Mother India(Mehboob), and Prabhat Ranjan’s conversation with Shivmurty, one of the leading voices in contemporary Hindi fiction, try to read various aspects of this problematic representation, whereas Madan Soni’s piece on Vinod Kumar Shukla’s Khilega to Dekhenge discovers that the novel does not merely take the village as its subject, but structures itself like one. Sadan Jha reads Renu’s work as the sort of writing that is possible only outside the nationalist constructs that give precedence to time over space- a heterotopian writing, modern on its own terms and as unusual as its locale.
