ऊधो मोहि ब्रज बिसरत नाही/ The City’s Forgotten Double
गाँव आधुनिकता और विकास की कर्मभूमि शहर का स्वाभाविक अन्य रहा है . इस भुला दिये गये अन्य के साथ शहर का संबंध निरंतर जटिल और अन्यायमूलक होता गया है. अमित चौधरी, सुनील गंगोपाध्याय और प्रेमेन्द्र मित्रा के लेखन और लोकप्रिय सिनेमा में गाँव की निर्मितियों को प्रश्नांकित करता हुआ युवा अंग्रेज़ी लेखक सुमना रॉय का निबंध इस अन्यता और अज़नबियत का पाठ खुद अपने लेखन के बरक़्स करता है. ऋत्विक घटक के सिनेमा पर कवि और अभिनेता ट्रिना बनर्जी का शोध-पत्र निर्वासन और यात्रा के रूपकों में शहर और गाँव के संबंध को समझने की कोशिश करता है. काशीनाथ सिंह के हिंदी उपन्यास काशी का अस्सी के अपने बेजोड़ पठन में युवा आलोचक हिमांशु पंड्या एक शहर के भीतर मौज़ूद देहात द्वारा किये जा रहे समूचे संसार के देहातीकरण को भूमंडलीकरण द्वारा किये जा रहे संस्कृतियों के समरूपीकरण के विरुद्ध एक प्रभावी प्रतिरोध की तरह पढ़ते हैं. वरूण ग्रोवर का टेलिविजन पर गाँव की छवियों की कथा कहता हुआ लेख खुद और मिहिर पंड्या का अपने छोटे शहर लौटने का वृतांत ऐसे पाठ हैं जिनमें अपने अपने देहात/देहातनुमा शहरों को छोड़ चुके आख्याता उसके साथ फिर एक संबंध बनाने की कोशिश करते हैं.
The village is the natural ‘other’ to the playground of modernity and progress that is the city. The city’s relationship to this forgotten other has progressively become more complex and unjust. Sumana Roy’s piece on this other-ness and alienation questions the representations of the village in the writings of Amit Chaudhuri, Sunil Gangopadhyay and Premendra Mitra, in popular cinema and, indeed, in her own work. Trina Banerjee’s paper on the cinema of Ritwik Ghatak tries to understand the metaphors of exile and travel in relation to the city and village. Himanshu Pandya’s piece on Kashinath Singh’s novel Kashi ka Assi reads the provincialization of the whole world by a village inside a city as an effective resistance against the normalization of cultures happening through globalization. Varun’s piece on representation of the village on TV and Mihir Pandya’s piece on his return to his small town are two texts in which an author who has left an almost-village home tries to reestablish a relationship with it.
