अम्बर्टो इको के समकालीन क्लैसिक द नेम ऑव् द रोज़ का हिन्दी अनुवाद अपने में एक घटना है और हमें खुशी है कि हम इस अनुवाद की एक झलक प्रकाशित कर पा रहे हैं. प्रख्यात हिन्दी आलोचक मदन सोनी, जिन्होंने यह दुसाध्य कर्म कर दिखाया है, का इस उपन्यास से संबंध लगभग दो दशक पहले शुरु हुआ जब उन्होंने इस पर एक विलक्षण आलोचना लिखी थी (जो कि इस उपन्यास के सबसे कल्पनाशील पठनों में से एक है). अनुवाद-अंश के साथ साथ वह आलोचनात्मक निबंध भी मूल हिन्दी में और अंग्रेजी अनुवाद में प्रकाशित है.
अनुवादक के विषय में यह कहना ज़रूरी लगता है कि उसके लिये अनुवाद ‘कृति के साथ एक नितांत निजी संबंध’ रहा है जिसका प्रमाण यह है कि उसने एडवर्ड सईद और अम्बर्टो इको सरीखे लेखकों की जटिल और अनुवाद-दुर्गम पु्स्तकों (और अनेक उत्तर-आधुनिक चिंतकों के लेखों के) अनुवाद बिना किसी आर्थिक सहयोग की उपलब्धि/प्रत्याशा के किये हैं. यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि सईद की पु्स्तक रेप्रेजेन्टेशन्स ऑव् द इंटेलैक्चुअल छह वर्ष पूर्व अनूदित हो कर भी अब तक अप्रकाशित है; उम्मीद है उपन्यास की लोकप्रियता के इस स्वर्ण-युग में जब मानो हर कोई (अंग्रेजी) उपन्यास लिख रहा है इस देश में द नेम ऑव् द रोज़ के हिन्दी अवतार की नियति कुछ भिन्न होगी. करीब पाँच सौ पृष्ठों में फैले उपन्यास को मदन सोनी ने अपने निबंध में पठन और प्रतिपठन के रणक्षेत्र के रूप में कल्पित किया है; यहाँ प्रस्तुत अंश में आप चरम पाठक – ब्रदर विलियम – और चरम प्रतिपाठक – ज्यार्गी – दोनों से रूबरू हो सकते हैं. |
The translation of Umberto Eco’s contemporary classic The Name of the Rose is an event in itself and we are very pleased to be able to present you a glimpse of this translation. Madan Soni, the renowned Hindi critic, who has performed this feat, first wrote about the book nearly two decades ago in a piece of criticism that ranks as one of the more imaginative readings of the novel. We are publishing this essay, too, in the original Hindi and in English translation, along with the excerpt from the translation.
It seems necessary here to say that for the translator, translation has always meant ‘a very private relation with the text’ — proof of which lies in the fact that he has translated the work of such complex and difficult-to-translate authors as Edward Said and Umberto Eco (and a number of other post-modern thinkers) without any financial aid or, indeed, any expectations in that direction. It is unfortunate that Said’s book Representations of the Intellectual has been lying translated, yet unpublished, for the last six years. One hopes that at a time which could be called the golden-age of the novel’s popularity, when just about everyone is writing a novel (in English), the fate of this translation of The Name of the Rose might be a little different. Madan Soni has read the novel as a battleground of reading and anti-reading.
