The first deadly attack on Indian democracy, on Swaraj as a way of life, came in the form of Emergency – a political decision that forever changed the way an Indian (citizen) related to the nation-state. Along with censorship and the suspension/erosion of democratic rights, it was also the first, painful introduction of Indian citizens to an entirely new sort of terror – that of the Surveillance State, of the Orwellian dystopia.
