आग्नैश नैमैश नॉज / Agnes Nemes Nagy

(1922-1991)

Probably the most important Hungarian poetess of the 20th century. Was part of the civilian resistance during World War II, and, in 1948, during the communist takeover, was silenced for more than a decade, allowed to publish only translations. A master of classical verse forms and free verse, her books include: Kettős világban, A lovak és az angyalok, Összegyűjtött versek, Szó és szótlanság and A magasság vágya among others. She won the 1946 Baumgarten Prize, 1969 Attila József Prize and 1983 Kossuth Prize.
