महान उर्दू कथा लेखक सआदत हसन मंटो की बम्बई – ‘सबको मौका देने वाली नगरी’ – चालों, दादाओं और तवायफों की, अनोखे कॉस्मोपॉलिटनिज़्म की और अब अकल्पनीय नज़र आने वाले धार्मिक सद्भाव की नगरी भी थी. मैट रीक और आफ़ताब अहमद के इन नए अनुवादों में बम्बई अपने इस स्वरुप में मानो फिर से लौटती है. फीचर में मंटो की दो कहानियों – जानकी और पैरन – और दो निबन्धों के साथ साथ अनुवादकों का लिखा मंटो की बम्बई का परिचय भी शामिल है.
पिछले कुछ बरस मंटो के पुनराविष्कार के बरस रहे हैं लेकिन मंटो हमेशा यहीं थे, हमारे आसपास क्योंकि मंटो हमसे संवाद कर रहे थे. ये अनुवाद उस संवाद के प्रतिनिधि हैं जो मंटो ने हमसे – अपने भविष्य के पाठकों – से शुरू किया था. |
The great Urdu fiction writer, Saadat Hasan Manto’s Bombay – ‘the land of opportunities’ – was also a land of chawls, dadas and prostitutes, of strange cosmopolitanism and of a now unimaginable inter-faith harmony. These wonderful new translations by Matt Reeck and Aftab Ahmed, of Manto’s writing about Bombay, bring all of this back. The feature has two short stories – Janaki and Pairan, two non-fiction pieces – Why I Don’t Go To The Movies and Women and the Film World and a short introduction by the translators.
