In Memory of Harish Bhadani

harishji

Harish Bhadani was one of those poets you have to fight with in order to learn from. He was a unique, fabulous ‘geetkaar’. And despite writing excellent ‘modern’ poems, the public image, and the self-image, of this ‘Jankavi’ (‘poet of the people’) remained that of a ‘geetkaar’. Without fighting with him, it was impossible to realize that the modernity of many poems is only of a ‘visual’ kind – of the way they are printed. He was a poet not only of the modern possibilities of ‘geet’, but also of its primitive anxieties. To listen to him read/sing in a crowd of hundreds, or in the courtyard of a friend’s house, was one way of getting his love.

To get love from him – you didn’t need to do much.

We present here a treasure of his recordings, done by one of his most beloved friends, Shiv Kumar Gandhi.

  1. Dear Editors,

I thank you for preserving and availing to us Harishji’s voice and orality in his absence. Only yesterday I came to know about Harish Bhadani’s demise when I met Jagdishwar Chaturvedi in Delhi. The news was a shock and I for some time did not believe that Bhadaniji is no more. Through this platform, I send my condolence to his family. His death for me and my family is a personal loss and his voice, his face and eyes and lips do reappear to my memory as live as the photograph you have published and the songs you have recorded.
