दास्तानगोई/दंगल: दानिश-महमूद/धवले-जगन

महमूद फ़ारूकी जब अपनी रोड्स स्कालरशिप ख़त्म करके हिंदुस्तान लौटे तो उन्हें अंदाजा नहीं था कि आने वाले सालों में उनकी ज़िंदगी किस्सा कहने की एक लुप्त हो चुकी परम्परा को, दास्ताँ सुनाने की एक चलनबाहर कला-शैली को फ़िर से जीवित करने के एक दिलचस्प कारोबार में उलझ जायेगी. महमूद ने अपने दम पर इस ‘दास्तानगोई’ को पुनर्जीवित कर दिया है. पहले अकेले और बाद में अंग्रेज़ी कवि दानिश हुसैन के साथ देश-विदेश के कई शहरों में उन्होंने दास्तान-ए-हम्ज़ा के हैरतंगेज़ किस्सों, कारनामों को पेश किया है. यहाँ प्रस्तुत है दोनों से पत्रकार-लेखक मीता कपूर की बातचीत.

राजस्थान के अलवर जिले में कुछ अलग तरह के कवि पाए जाते हैं. उनको सुनने हजारों आते है और वे हास्यकवि नहीं हैं. उनके कविता आयोजनों को ‘कवितापाठ’ नहीं ‘दंगल’ कहा जाता है और इन पद-दंगलों में भी अक्सर कहानियाँ कही जाती है. यहाँ प्रस्तुत है दंगल की परम्परा, उसके वर्तमान ‘स्टार कवियों’ – धवले और जगन – तथा इस सबके साथ साथ उस समाज के बारे में हिन्दी कवि और इस इलाके की भाषा में ख़ुद भी कविता करने वाले प्रभात का लेख और एक दंगल का वीडियो जिसे उपलब्ध कराने के लिए हम मदन मीणा के आभारी हैं.

DASTANGOI/DANGAL: Danish-Mahmood / Dhavale-Jagan

When Mahmood Farooqui, a Rhodes Scholar, returned to India from Oxford, he would never have guessed that in the coming years he’d become involved with a lost tradition and art of telling stories. Mahmood, single-handedly, is responsible for reviving ‘Dastangoi’. Solo, at first, and then with the English poet Danish Husain, he has traveled around the world presenting fantastic tales from the Dastan e Amir Hamza. Here we present you Mita’s interview with Mahmood and Danish.

You can find poets of a different sort in the district of Alwar, Rajasthan. They are not versifying comedians, yet thousands come to hear them. These events are not called ‘poetry readings’ but ‘dangals’. And in these dangals, stories too are often told. We present here a piece on the tradition of dangals, its current stars poets – Dhavale and Jagan – and the society in which these dangals take place, by the poet Prabhat, as well as a video of one such performance, courtesy Madan Meena.
