बीसवीं शताब्दी के हिंदी-उर्दू अदब में तरक्कीपसंद तहरीक और उसके द्वारा प्रोत्साहित यथार्थवादी सौंदर्यशास्त्र की लोकप्रियता और प्रभुत्व के बरक्स उससे नाइत्तिफाकी रखने वाले लेखकों को अपने ढंग से लिखने के लिए और अदबी पहचान पाने के लिए अपने तरक्कीपसंद हमसफरों से ज्यादा हौसला दरकार था. उर्दू के बेमिसाल अफ़सानानिगार नैयर मसूद ऐसे ही लेखकों में से हैं और उनका काम अभी उर्दू से बाहर उतना नहीं जाना जाता जितना उसे जाना जाना चाहिए. नज़र अब्बास और महेश वर्मा द्वारा हिंदी में लिप्यंतरित तीन कहानियाँ साधारण जीवन को बिल्कुल नामालूम तरीके से असाधारण कला में बदल देने के उनके हुनर की एक बानगी हमारे सामने पेश करती हैं.
