भारत में एक अरसे से रह रहीं मारिएता तारालुद माद्रेल को, जिन्हें मीराबहन के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, अमरकंटक की महकी बगिया में धार्मिक पुस्तकों के बीच जर्जर अवस्था में एक पुस्तक ‘आसान हिंदी’ में लिखी हुई मिली जिसकी एक नक़ल मारिएता ने हिंदी में तैयार कर ली. बाद में उन्हें लगा गुलबकावली का यह किस्सा उन तक भी पहुंचना चाहिए जो हिंदी में नहीं पढ़ते. पूरा पाठ उपलब्ध कराने के लिए हम उनकी और प्रतिलिपि की नायाब दोस्त तेजी ग्रोवर के शुक्रगुजार हैं.
मणिपुरी मूल की युवा अंग्रेजी नाटककार स्वर थाऊनावजम का नया नाटक फेक पेलिन्ड्रोम्स इस अंक की उपलब्धियों में है. अपने पहले नाटक टुरेल में मणिपुर की त्रासदी का साहसी, आक्रोशमय, उदास चित्रण करने वाली इस युवा एक्टिविस्ट लेखक का यह नया नाटक इस साल के शुरू में बंगलौर में मंचित किया गया था.

A long-time resident of India, Marietta Taralrud Maddrell, also known as Miraben, came upon Gulbakaavli by chance – she found it, in “easy Hindi”, among a small library of religious texts at the ashram where she was staying in Maiki Baghiya, Amarkantak. Since the book was falling apart from age, she copied the whole text in long hand and eventually translated it into English as well. We are grateful to Teji Grover for leading us to this amazing text.
Swar Thounaojam’s first play Turel was a courageous, angry and sorrowful depiction of the crises in Manipur. The second text in this feature – and one of the highlights of the issue – is her new play, Fake Palindromes, which premiered in Bangalore earlier this year.
