सोलह बेहतरीन युवा कथाकारों के बीच इस फीचर में अमितावा कुमार भारतीय अंग्रेज़ी लेखन के अभिभावक की भूमिका में है, लगभग. पटना के करीब सोनपुर से न्यूयार्क के करीब स्टोनी ब्रुक के बीच यात्रा करती हुई उनकी कहानी प्रेम, प्रवास और आत्मा के उबड़खाब़ड की एक परिपक्व कथा है, उनके सदाबहार अंदाजेबया में. वेस्ट इंडीज और यूके की पृष्ठभूमि से अने वाली शर्मिला चौहान और अमेरिका में पले-बढ़े, अब भारत में रह रहे अश्विन पारूलकर के यहाँ अमितावा की तरह प्रवास लेकिन एक मुखर थीम नहीं है.

जयप्रकाश सत्यमूर्ति, आकृति मांधवानी और प्रतिलिपि में पहली बार प्रकाशित हो रहे सुरेश सुब्रमण्यन तथा बिदिशा बसु का काम नामुमकिन के इलाके का अपने अपने ढंग से अनुसंधान करता है. अपने कथेतर गद्य के लिये प्रसिद्ध एनी ज़ैदी और अम्बर रंजना पाँडे की पहले पहल प्रकाशित हो रही कहानी ‘खून का बदला ख़ून’ में यह अनुसंधान एक कॉमिक टर्न लेता है . एनी की कहानी में जहाँ कथावाचक एक गधे से प्रेम करने लगता है वहीं अम्बर का रीमिक्स आख्यान हेमलेट का एक दिलचस्प भारतीय टेक-ऑफ है.

इसके समांतर चर्चित उपन्यासकार और आलोचक चंद्रहास चौधरी की कहानी एकदम परिचित को अपने बयान से असाधारण बना देती है. अपने साहसिक प्रयोगों के लिये प्रसिद्ध कवि विवेक नारायणन की पद्य-कथा इस पूरे विशेषांक में एक सुखद विषयांतर है.

फीचर में श्रीमोयी घोष, इंदिरा चंद्रशेखर, आदित्य सुदर्शन, शरथ कुमारराजू और रिनचिन की कहानियाँ और शरण्या मनिवन्नन का उपन्यास अंश भी शामिल है.

Amitava Kumar presides over this selection of English stories by 16 fine young Indian writers. His story, traveling from Sonepur, near Patna, to Stony Brook, near New York City, turns a mature gaze towards questions of love, migration and the self. Sharmila Chauhan from the UK, and Ashwin Parulkar from the US, on the other hand, are here with stories that, unlike those of a lot of non-resident authors, do not make migration their primary concern.

Jayaprakash Satyamurthy, Bidisha Basu, Suresh Subramanian and Aakriti Mandhwani’s stories explore the realms of the fantastic in distinctive ways, while in the stories by Annie Zaidi and Umber Ranjana Pandey this exploration takes a more comic turn: Annie’s narrator falls in love with a donkey, while Umber presents an amusing Indian remix of Hamlet.

Elsewhere, novelist and critic, Chandrahas Choudhury’s story takes the familiar and everyday and turns it into something special, while Vivek Narayanan’s provides a welcome digression from prose with his verse-fiction.

The feature also includes stories by Shrimoyee Ghosh, Indira Chandrashekhar, Rinchin and Aditya Sudarshan, an excerpt from Sharanya Manivannan’s forthcoming novel, as well as the third in Sharath Komarraju’s series of little mysteries.
