गल्प विशेषांक की अगुआई दस स्त्री कथाकारों का लेखन कर रहा है. यह लेखन अपने स्त्री-आख्यान होने को लेकर जितना सजग है उतना ही इस बात को लेकर है कि हर ‘सार्वभौमिक’ कहे जाने वाले आख्यान को यह किस क़दर अस्थिर कर सकता है. ऐसा करते हुए लेकिन यह ‘सार्वभौमिक’ को एक असंभावना में नहीं बदलता बल्कि उसके लेखन में मुमकिन होने की कई वैकल्पिक विधियों का अविष्कार करता है.

प्रत्येक कथा एक दूसरी कथा है. दूसरों के जीवन के बारे में. अपने जीवन को दूसरों के और दूसरों के जीवन को अपने जीवन की तरह और इस तरह हर जीवन को एक दोहरे जीवन की तरह, हर कथा को एक दोहरी कथा की तरह देखने की कथा है. इसका दोहरापन इस अर्थ में भी है कि ख़ुद को लगातार इसी पृथ्वी पर, बज़िद, लोकेट करने के बावजूद ये एक वैकल्पिक पृथ्वी की, एक दूसरे राज्य की प्रति-कल्पना की कथाएँ भी हैं.

शीर्ष कथाओं में अंजुम हसन, शर्मिष्ठा मोहंती, संपूर्ण चटर्जी, मित्रा फूकन और निताशा कौल की अंग्रेजी कहानियों, अंग्रेजी अनुवाद में सारा राय और तेजी ग्रोवर की हिंदी कहानियों, मनीषा कुलश्रेष्ठ की हिंदी कहानी और प्रत्यक्षा के नए हिंदी उपन्यास के लंबे अंश के साथ साथ युवा नार्वीजी लेखिका इंग्रिड स्टोरहॉमेन के चेर्नोबिल की न्यूक्लियर त्रासदी की छाया में पीड़ितों की सामूहिक स्मृतियों और विस्मृतियों के अभिलेख की तरह लिखे गये उपन्यास के अंश भी अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद में शामिल हैं.

Headlining the Fiction Special are stories by 10 women writers. Their writing, while aware of being a feminine narrative, is equally aware of its capacity to destabilize all the so-called ‘universal’ narratives. It is even more remarkable that, in doing so, these narratives do not reject ‘universalism’ in itself; instead, they discover many alternative ways of making it possible through writing.

Every story is another story. About the lives of others. A story of looking at one’s life as another, another’s life as one’s own, and in this way, every life as a double life and every story as a double story… Double also in the sense that, despite locating themselves on this planet, these stories are also about imagining alternate planets, alternate countries.

This lead feature comprises: stories in English by Anjum Hasan, Sharmistha Mohanty, Sampurna Chattarji, Mitra Phukan and Nitasha Kaul; English translations of Hindi stories by Sara Rai and Teji Grover; a Hindi story by Manisha Kulshreshtha and a long excerpt from Pratyaksha’s new Hindi novel; and an excerpt, in English translation, from a novel by the Norwegian writer Ingrid Storholmen, that channels the collective memories of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster.
